TSDZ2 vs TSDZ8: Which Tongsheng Motor to Choose?

The TSDZ2 launched Tongsheng's reputation in e-bike conversion as early as 2018. The TSDZ8, sold since 2024, is the motor the manufacturer now pushes front and center. Here's what genuinely separates them.

What the table reveals

The TSDZ8 wins on nearly every objective criterion: officially documented and significantly higher torque, stronger water resistance, a dual sensor (speed + torque). The TSDZ2 has only one real advantage left, but it carries weight for some buyers: its open-source firmware, developed and maintained for years by an active community.

The real deciding factor. If your conversion project depends on firmware customization (assist curves, adjustable speed limiting for private use, fine sensor tuning), the TSDZ2 remains the only proven option. For everything else β€” including most mainstream conversions β€” the TSDZ8 is objectively better documented and more powerful.

Availability

Another practical difference: searching "Tongsheng TSDZ2" on Amazon.fr today leads to the same configurable kit as "Tongsheng TSDZ8." The TSDZ2 as a distinct new product barely exists anymore in the current commercial offering β€” only spare parts specifically target it.

Why the TSDZ2's spec sheet remains incomplete

This isn't an editorial choice on our part: it's a fact of the market. Suzhou Tongsheng Electrical Appliance Co., Ltd.'s current official catalog (tongsheng-e.com) no longer lists the original TSDZ2 β€” only its successor, the TSDZ2B, appears there. Without a manufacturer sheet, we must rely on resellers who, on torque especially, quote figures ranging from 50 to 80 NΒ·m depending on configuration, with no source settling between them.

The TSDZ8, by contrast, benefits from a spec sheet Tongsheng publishes in full β€” including its own torque range (90 to 140 NΒ·m), stated as such by the manufacturer rather than left as an uncertainty. It's this difference in status, more than raw performance, that truly separates the two motors in 2026.

What the open firmware community says

The TSDZ2-Smart-EBike project has documented the TSDZ2 since 2018: customizable assist curves, adjustable speed limiting, fine torque-sensor tuning. This maturity hasn't transferred to the TSDZ8 to the same extent β€” the two motors run on different controller architectures, and we found no confirmation of a stable port of the open firmware to the TSDZ8.

Frequently asked questions

Does the TSDZ8 really replace the TSDZ2?

In Tongsheng’s official catalog, yes β€” but indirectly, via the TSDZ2B. The original TSDZ2 no longer appears there at all; the TSDZ8 is presented by the manufacturer as an improved version of the TSDZ2B, itself the TSDZ2’s direct heir.

Is the TSDZ2 still worth it in 2026?

Only for a project specifically built around its open-source firmware. For a new purchase without that constraint, the TSDZ8 offers a fully published manufacturer spec sheet and considerably higher torque, for about 30 € more (336 € versus 306 €).

Can you put the TSDZ2’s firmware on a TSDZ8?

No. The TSDZ2-Smart-EBike open firmware project specifically targets the original TSDZ2’s sensor and controller. The TSDZ8 runs on a different controller architecture, and we found no confirmation of a stable port of the open firmware to it.
