Tongsheng TSDZ8: Full Review

Tongsheng TSDZ8
Our verdict8,5/10

The Tongsheng TSDZ8 is the mid-drive motor Tongsheng positions as the TSDZ2B's successor: speed + torque sensor, 500 or 750 W depending on the version, and torque climbing up to 140 N·m. From 336 €, it's also the motor most cited right now among conversion kit resellers.

Verdict at a glance

A complete, consistent official spec sheet — rare in this market — but a claimed torque figure that invites confusion: 90, 120, or 140 N·m depending on configuration, while most resellers quote only one, without specifying which.

Pros

  • Spec sheet published directly by Tongsheng (tongsheng-e.com), a rare case in this market
  • Torque adjustable from 90 to 140 N·m depending on the configuration chosen
  • Speed + torque sensor, IP65 rating, universal 68/73 mm bottom bracket
  • Contained weight for the category: 4.8 kg

Cons

  • The exact configuration (power/torque) is almost never specified by resellers
  • Open-source firmware support less mature than on the TSDZ2
  • The listed price depends on a configurable kit: hard to compare one listing to another

Who it's for

Urban or touring conversions that want a recent motor, well documented by the manufacturer, with a comfortable torque margin for hills and cargo.

Open-source firmware is your top priority: the TSDZ2 remains the community reference, with years of development history behind it. See our TSDZ2 vs TSDZ8 comparison.

What Tongsheng publishes, and what resellers say about it

This is the point worth explaining before any purchase. Tongsheng's official spec sheet states a maximum torque of 90, 120, or 140 N·m depending on the kit's configuration. On Amazon and AliExpress, product descriptions almost always quote a single figure — most often 140 Nm, the most flattering of the three — without specifying which version it corresponds to. This isn't a reseller invention: it's a genuine manufacturer figure, presented out of context.

What this means in practice. If maximum torque is a decisive factor for your use case (significant elevation gain, heavy loads), ask the seller for the exact configuration before buying — the power and gear ratio tied to the quoted figure. Absent that detail, assume the entry-price kit corresponds to the lowest configuration in the range.

Performance8.8/10
Pedaling comfort8.5/10

The performance score stays high despite the torque ambiguity: the official 90-140 N·m range covers a lot of ground, including demanding use at the top end.

The TSDZ2B shares the same sensor architecture but caps at 80 N·m for a lower weight (3.6 kg) — plenty for everyday urban use. The TSDZ16 promises 160 N·m but doesn't appear in Tongsheng's current official catalog, unlike the TSDZ8.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Tongsheng TSDZ8 really put out 140 N·m of torque?

It depends on the configuration purchased. Tongsheng’s official spec sheet (tongsheng-e.com) publishes three values depending on the version: 90, 120, and 140 N·m. A reseller advertising "140 Nm" without specifying the configuration isn’t lying, but is only telling part of the story — usually the most flattering of the three.

Is the TSDZ8 the same as the "TSDZ2 Turbo"?

Yes. TSDZ8 is the name under which Tongsheng officially markets it; "TSDZ2 Turbo" is a label some resellers use to signal it as the TSDZ2’s successor. Both names refer to the same product, with the same spec sheet.

Is the TSDZ8 compatible with my bike?

Officially, with a 68 or 73 mm bottom bracket — the vast majority of mountain and city bike frames. Check this before buying: a non-standard bottom bracket makes installation impossible without an adapter.

Can you install open-source firmware on the TSDZ8?

Not with the same maturity as on the TSDZ2. The most active open firmware project (TSDZ2-Smart-EBike) targets the TSDZ2’s sensor; the TSDZ8 shares a similar sensor architecture but, to our knowledge, doesn’t have the same level of community support. If open firmware is your priority, the TSDZ2 remains the reference — see our comparison.
